How we select and compare Parmesan factory tours
Last updated: 2026-07-31
This page explains, in plain terms, how a tour ends up in our comparison, what fields we check before publishing a comparison table, and — just as important — what we deliberately leave out because it cannot be verified. See how we rank Parmesan tours for the ranking-specific version of this method, and our author page for who does this work.
Selection criteria
- Relevance — the tour must include a genuine Parmigiano Reggiano dairy (caseificio) production visit, not just a retail tasting counter.
- Listing clarity — the official Viator listing must clearly state what is and isn't included: transport, tasting, number of stops, and duration.
- Traveler feedback — visible on the official listing (Viator and, where aggregated, Tripadvisor), read for recurring themes rather than copied as marketing quotes.
- Live availability — the tour must currently be bookable through the Viator Partner API we use to pull data.
Operators cannot pay for placement, for inclusion, or for a more favorable comparison. We do not accept sponsored listings.
Where our data comes from
Every price, duration, cancellation term, group-size limit, and review count shown in our comparison tables is pulled directly from the Viator Partner API — the same system operators use to publish their own listings — via our own server-side integration. We do not estimate, average across unrelated sources, or reuse figures from other travel sites. Each comparison table states the date its figures were checked; as a standing baseline, our own prices were last checked 2026-07-14 and duration/cancellation/group-size/review data 2026-07-31, refreshed periodically as the shortlist changes.
What we compare
- Price per person (from-price, as published on the listing)
- Duration (fixed or variable range, as stated by the operator)
- Group size and format (shared group vs. private, minimum and maximum travelers per booking)
- Format (dairy-only vs. Parmesan-and-Parma-Ham combo vs. balsamic-inclusive)
- Cancellation policy (free-cancellation window, and whether the operator can cancel for low sign-up)
- Review volume and average rating, split by source where the API provides that breakdown
Data we do not invent
To keep this guide honest and useful, we do not publish:
- Fabricated ranking scores or "match percentages"
- Invented customer counts ("10,000+ happy travelers") not sourced from the API
- Claims that a tour is "the most booked" or "#1" without a verifiable public metric behind it
- Guarantees of wheelchair accessibility, child suitability, or language availability beyond what the operator states on the listing
- Guide certification claims, or claims of "exclusive" or "private" access we have not verified from the listing itself
Where a fact is genuinely unavailable, we say "check current details on the tour page" rather than filling the gap with a plausible-sounding number.
