Ranking methodology

How we rank Parmesan tours

By the editorial teamPublished 2026-07-31Last updated 2026-07-31

We do not use a proprietary score to rank tours. Instead, each of our 'best for' and comparison pages picks a category (cheapest, highest-rated dairy-only, smallest group, most-reviewed combo) and orders tours within it by a single verifiable Viator API field — price, rating, group cap, or review count — stated explicitly next to the result. This page explains that mechanic in full; our broader editorial policy explains selection criteria.

This page is the ranking-specific companion to our full editorial policy, which also covers selection criteria and data sourcing. Read that page for the complete picture; this one focuses narrowly on how order and "best for" labels are decided.

The mechanic, step by step

  1. We start from our current shortlist of Viator-listed tours that meet the relevance and listing-clarity bar described in our editorial policy.
  2. For a given comparison page, we pick the single field the page is actually about — e.g. from-price for our price comparison, or maximum-travelers-per-booking for our small-group page.
  3. We sort or label tours by that one field, pulled directly from the Viator Partner API, and show the number next to the claim so you can check our arithmetic.
  4. Where a "best for" tag combines more than one factor (e.g. "best for families" weighing age bands and group size together), we say so explicitly rather than hiding it behind a single score.

Check availability on Viator

This is a tracked affiliate link (see our affiliate disclosure). Opens the official listing in a new tab — price, availability and cancellation terms are confirmed there, not on this site.

What never affects ranking

  • Payment or commission rate from the operator
  • How long a tour has been in our shortlist
  • Anything we have not sourced from the Viator API or a cited official source

How we verified this: Prices shown were checked against live Viator Partner API listings on 2026-07-14. Duration, cancellation terms, group-size limits and review counts were re-checked against the same API on 2026-07-31. Prices and availability change; always confirm the current figure on the official tour listing before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a numeric score behind your rankings?

No. We do not publish a proprietary 0–100 score or star rating of our own. Where we show a rating, it is the operator's own combined Viator/Tripadvisor average, clearly labeled as such, not a score we calculated.

Can a tour operator pay to rank higher?

No. We do not offer paid placement, sponsored ranking, or "featured" slots for a fee. Our affiliate commission rate does not vary in a way that would reward featuring one operator over another, and inclusion is decided by the criteria on this page.

Why does the order of tours sometimes change?

Mainly because we periodically re-check live listing data — a tour can be removed if it goes offline on Viator, and its position in a "best for X" list can shift if review counts or stated details change meaningfully.
